vacuumIf you were like me a couple of years ago, you would wonder what makes a vacuum distinct. A while back I thought they were all the same: a few vacuums I had to replace before their time changed my mind.

The positive qualities you should be looking for in a vacuum all contribute to either ease of use, such as low weight and size, or the betterment of its’ operation, such as increased power and dust bag size.

If you have multiple stories or just an expanded floor plan in your house, the most important vacuum cleaner quality for you is likely to be size and weight. Carrying a bulky, heavy vacuum around can be a chore, especially up the stairs or across several rooms. As such, you would be wise to consider the smallest and lightest vacuum possible, without making a compromise in power. Fortunately, vacuums are getting smaller and easier to carry every day, and most small vacuums are just as powerful as their competitors, and carry standard size vacuum bags.

Secondly, you should consider power and dust bag capacity. A more powerful vacuum will gather more dust, dirt and heavier particles from your floor in fewer sweeps or in ways a less powerful model would not even be capable of. More power would save you a lot of time and will result in a more thorough clean. This improves indoor air quality and neatness considerably.

You may also wish to look for vacuums housing the largest possible dust bags you can find, if you are satisfied with every other criteria. This will save you time in replacing bags, as well as potentially increasing the vacuum’s longevity as it will have considerably fewer opportunities to overload.

Getting the right vacuum for you involves several steps, and depends greatly on your living arrangements. If you have a larger house that needs vacuuming often, or have lots of carpeting, consider the most powerful model you can get. This will save you a lot of time and clean your carpets more thoroughly. If you have a smaller apartment with largely wood, linoleum or tile floors, you may wish to save some money and cut down on the power you would not need as much for those floor surfaces.
